DOCTOR WHO: THE BEAST BELOW REVIEW
by admin on Apr.24, 2010, under Uncategorized
Hello, my name is Kurt Donath the creator of Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters. It’s a Superhero Web Series that starts June 18th here on this channel and coincides with our world Premiere that takes place on the same day at Florida Supercon; South Florida’s comic book convention in Miami. For those of you that plan on coming to Supercon June 18-20th; our film will be screening all three days. We look forward to seeing you.
This is my review on the 2nd Matt Smith Doctor Who episode, “The Beast Below.”
Some episodes are like “wow” when you see them. Others are like “Eh” and then you get some that are in between that your like “Meh.” This episode is so “Meh.” Sorry but it is.
The beast below starts with the mystery of a little girl crying in the corner of a moving future city that’s inside a space ship. Just by looking at the girl crying Doctor Who knows that something is up. This future City is run by automated creatures that are inside fortune teller booths. The booths remind me of the one that was in Tom Hanks’ “Big” movie.
The design of the city itself reminds me of the film “Dark Night” and this combined with the Fortune Teller Booths make me yawn because I feel like I’ve seen this episode before. Actually I do feel like I literally have seen this episode before because it reminds of “The Long Game” that starred Christopher Eccleston and Simon Pegg.
The best part of this episode is when Amy Pond is in the voting cubicle and the television recognizes her and she leans in forward to hear her marital status. It’s a great moment followed by another one when she sees the truth on the Tele and hits the forget button.
The Doctor and Amy still have the best chemistry I have ever seen with a Doctor and his companion. The banter between the two of them when she asks him, “are there any more Time Lords?” is very good. The delivery of the explanation of what happened to them by Matt Smith is also very good.
Steven Moffat’s whole concept for this season of Doctor Who as one big fairy tale are on full display through out this episode. There’s a sequence right out of Pinocchio and the whale. Trust me you’ll know it when you see it.
Finally the foreshadowing continues with seeing a “Crack in the Universe.” Like I said; a very “Meh” episode.
FIRESTAR ONE-SHOT REVIEW

Here’s my review on Firestar #1. Basically, I’m very disappointed. There was very little action. There were no cameo’s from any one in Firestar’s past. Which really shocked me. Where’s Spider-man? Where’s the X-men? Where’s Emma Frost? Where’s Marvel Boy or the rest of the New Warriors? I can’t understand it?
The first page had a history that was completely void of Spider-man and his Amazing Friends which is all fine and good since Angelica Jones couldn’t have met Spider-Man the way she met him on the 80’s T.V. show. But still: There were so many references to the show in this book that they should have done what I expected them to do and just have a cameo of either Spider-man or Ice-Man or Aunt May or even Miss Lion the dog.
Spoiler Alert: As you all ready know the Spider-Friends history is off the table in this story. She isn’t a “Founder” of the X-men along with Cyclops, Angel, and Ice-Man like she was on the 80’s Show. Though just like the show she’s still in college. Her and Van Wilder I guess. She still has a dad. She still saves construction worker’s from fatal falls. She still says the phrase, “Go For It!”
In the story her dad’s dating the mother of her arch enemy from school Cassie Sandusky. Which really bugs me because this is a direct story line from Christy Marx’s television script “A Firestar Is Born” which featured Firestar’s origin story. Which is the true blue origin story in my opinion since Firestar was specially created for the Spider-Man/Amazing Friends series when it was decided they wouldn’t use the Human Torch character.
In that story Angelica was tormented by a childhood foe named Bonnie who went around calling her Angelica Jinx. The bullying got so bad that Angelica went all “Carrie” on her and everyone else at the high-school prom setting off the sprinklers. In this story Bonnie is replaced by this Cassie girl who is clearly the same person but now suffering from alcoholism.
The only good part in this story here is when Angelica Jones takes off her wig to Cassie in a touching moment to show her that she’s bald from the Chemo therapy having just recovered from breast cancer.
So that’s their take on Firestar. She’s a survivor. I guess most superheroes are though. Which is why the ending isn’t really as deep as I think the writer was going for. The interior art was decent but couldn’t match up to the gorgeous cover by Stephanie Hans and the lettering wasn’t that good either. Overall just a poor script, a poor presentation for a character who deserved far more then what this one-shot contained. Like I said at the beginning. I’m disappointed.
So that’s my review thanks for listening. I’ll be back tomorrow to review Brightest Day #0 and Flash #1. Thanks and Please Subscribe.
CCW’s Blackest Night: My Response
by admin on Apr.20, 2010, under Uncategorized
Hello, my name is Kurt Donath the creator of Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters. I have a Superhero Web Series that starts June 18th here on this channel.
My review today is going to be on the CCWs review of Blackest night. I was originally going to review Brightest Day #0 and Flash #1 but Im going to push that back to Thursday. The reason being is that Blackest night is where Brightest Day comes from and I feel I cant review that story line with any justice until I give you my opinion of Blackest Night which I loved.
CCW for those of you that dont know is the Comic Culture Warrior channel. It features Elliot Serrano; a comic book writer and Jose Melendez a Comic Book vender who has made it his sole purpose in life to tear Tony Daniel a new one any chance he can get. Not that theres anything wrong with that. Ill get to Tony Daniel later. I have a love hate relationship every time CCW puts out another video. I love it because I think things guys are pretty fair. Sometimes harsh but give very fair reviews of the artists and writers whose books their reviewing. I hate it because each video averages anywhere from 15 to 20 min. long and I have to sit there through minutes of them promoting themselves and their blog just to get to the good stuff. Seriously; I would really like to see their videos under 10 minutes but thats just me.
I find myself agreeing with these guys more and more each day. I agree that You tube is no longer comment friendly. I dont like any of the new layout changes and I hate the fact that the side bar has been taken out.
I also agree that Bendis hasnt done anything special since Avengers Disassembled and New Avengers. Secret Invasion just wasnt that good and couldnt touch the genius of House of M.
So, lets have it out guys. Blackest Night. First off Elliot I feel for you. Everyone always talks about how amazing Jose is on the show and nobody ever comes to your defense to say how great you are. Watching you too is like watching Waynes World. You are the Wayne in the relationship talking about how the movie Cinema Paradiso fell short of expectations in a rather informative monolouge and Jose is the Garth simply stating that the movie Sucks and he gets all the applause. Ive seen Elliot go on tangents defending Marvel and Jose will win the argument by saying, Yeah, will I just dont like how marvel is selling their comics at $3.99 and just like that the crowd grows wild. Poor Elliot.
Oh well, dont worry. Im listening Elliot and thats all that really matters. Having said that. Blackest Night. Why do I think you guys are wrong to say the ending sucked? Well, its true that Geoff Johns was rewritting all the wrongs that DC made in the past. I am very upset that they brought back people who were only dead for all of five minutes like Martian Manhunter. His death in Requiem was one of the most touching I have ever read and they should have just left the character to R.I.P. with that amazing legacy.
But I just have to disagree with you saying the story didnt have an ending. The conclusion in my opinion was brillant. I loved the white lantern corps. I loved Dead man being brought back to life. And I didnt see any decompression at all. I thought that they story kept me engaged through all 8 books.
Though I have to say I would take you guys over CBR any day of the week. And if I ever do get to meet Tony Daniel in person Ill defend Joses honor and tell Daniel he has no business being both a writer and artist on the same book. The dudes got to pick one.
So thats my review thanks for listening. Ill be back tomorrow to review something Im very excited about. The Firestar one-shot. Thanks and Please Subscribe.

DOCTOR WHO: The Eleventh Hour Review
by admin on Apr.19, 2010, under Uncategorized
Please Subscribe! Hello everyone my name is Kurt Donath the creator of Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters. For those of you who have all ready subscribed to this channel know I have a Superhero Web Series that starts June 18th here on this channel and coincides with our world Premiere that takes place on the same day at Florida Supercon; South Florida’s comic book convention in Miami. For those of you that plan on coming to Supercon June 18-20th; our film will be screening all three days. We look forward to seeing you.
Here’s my review on Matt Smith’s debut as Doctor Who in “The Eleventh Hour.”
This is a spoiler review by the way so if you haven’t seen this episode you may want to not listen as I give away some plot points. We have to start this review with Steven Moffat who produced Jekyll and Coupling and who is now the producer of this season of Doctor Who. Moffat wrote this episode; The Eleventh Hour which reminds me of his previous script The Girl in the Fire Place. It’s so similar in so many ways. For one he meets Amy Pond his new companion played by Karen Gillan the same way he meets Madame De Pompadour as a child before he sees her all grown up played by Sophia Myles. Also, just like in Fireplace; Prisoner Zero doesn’t talk for most of the episode just like the Clockwork Robots.
Let me move on to the weakest part of the story because once I do that I can rave about all the good stuff. The food sequence was just lame. It was clearly filler. It does nothing for you unless your ten years old and you find it funny for people to spit food out of their mouths.
Bang! Done! Now lets talk about the show overall.
The show was freaking amazing! I loved this episode.
Let’s start with the casting of Karen Gillan as Amy Pond. She is just brilliant. She is hands down the best companion since Billie Piper. And that’s saying a lot. The companions are always good. They are constantly in other things. Piper who has gone on to do Secret Diaries of a call girl, Freema Agyeman is in the British version of Law and Order, and Catherine Tate who was amazing as Donna Noble was a big deal before she was even cast.
So we new that Karen Gillan would be a good companion before we even saw the episode because the casting in Doctor Who has always been good. But man is Karen Gillan good. Yes, she is Beautiful. We new that going in. But her presence on screen really draws you in. She plays Amy Pond as witty, funny, strong and vulnerable all at the same time. She has some great moments here. I love when she locks Doctor who in the car door by his tie. And Her explaining to the Doctor what a Kiss-a-gram girl does is just hilarious.
The new music and the new tardis are both equally gorgeous. I love how the console just has a mish-mash of things and ideas. It’s a throwback to The first doctor Willam Hartnell’s tardis whose console buttons really never meant anthing. Having a typewriter and Hot and Cold faucet spickets are just part of an inside joke that spans nearly 50 years.
So last but not least let’s talk about the new Doctor played by Matt Smith. Smith is very good. I think his portrayal is very organic and honest. I caught him a couple of times playing it campy but overall he was worth the wait. I do however miss David Tennant. The scene where Prisoner Zero is disguised as the man with his dog; you could only help but wonder what David Tennant would have done with the line “Watch the Faces.” And I really do think Matt Smith was a bit out of his league saying to the alien Eye, “So Basically; Run.” Really? With Tennant you would have bought it.
I still can’t wait for this season to unfold. I’m very excited that there bringing back the “Forrest of the dead” companion who lost her life saving the doctor from the Vashta Nerada and I love the foreshadowing of the big bad to come, “Silence Doctor. Silence will fall.”
So that’s my review thanks for listening. Just for fun I thought I would post the Top twenty-five all-time classic Doctor Who Stories that were rated by Doctor Who fans from the official Doctor Who Magazine. I’ll be back tomorrow to review Brightest Day #0 and Flash #1. Thanks and Please Subscribe.

Lucky Streak’s review of Kick-Ass
by admin on Apr.16, 2010, under Uncategorized
Hello everyone my name is Kurt Donath the creator of Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters. For those of you who have all ready subscribed to this channel know I have a Superhero Web Series that starts June 18th here on this channel and coincides with our world Premiere that takes place on the same day at Florida Supercon; South Floridas comic book convention in Miami. For those of you that plan on coming to Supercon June 18-20th; our film will be screening all three days. We look forward to seeing you. So, why we wait for the premiere of Lucky Streak and the Crime Fighters I thought I would pop on this channel from time to time and talk about all things comic Book which is what has inspired me to do Lucky Streak in the first place.
My first review I felt should be Kick-Ass because the character is so much like Lucky Streak in the sense that he has entered a world where he is clearly over his head but he has so much heart he presses on even to the avail that he gets his ass more often kicked then kicking other asses. On ironspiderhulk04s his review of Kick-Ass came out a week ahead of ours because the British got to see it early. His review is so tight that Im going to link this to his. Ironspider was so dead on about the adaptation, The action portrayed in the film, The actors chosen for the roles and I also agree with his breakdown of the costumes. So what Ill review more is the story behind the film. Mathew Vaughn was a producer from England who brought back the gangster films in a big and surprising way like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and went on to Direct Layer Cake which starred Daniel Craig and featured Craig in such a way the producers of the James Bond series hired him. Vaughn was asked to direct X-Men 3 and when he read the script he went to the studio and asked then for changes, they refused and he left the project only for Brett Ratner to helm it and it made big money in the box office. I really do think this was the motivation for Vaughn to make Kick-Ass. He had to prove to the studios and ultimately himself that he could do it.
When Mark Millar was writing the comic book series Vaughn saw an advanced copy and immediately started writing his own version of the script. It should be noted that this is a true blue independent feature. Even though its budget is in the millions of dollars it had no studio backing. Every studio turned this project down. Vaughn went out and got the funding himself. And my box office prediction is that it will easily make 55-65 million in its first weekend alone.
Ill talk about the film a little bit here and say I really love the Character Geography. Meaning, the way the Characters are explained to be in certain locations. Its very clever for kick-ass to live in a home that looks a lot like a house in Forrest Lawn where Peter Parker lives. I love how in the Atomic Café comic book shop Dave will always be seated with the Kick-Ass costume behind him blocking the light from Daves face. So, you get the feeling that hes constantly in the Kick-Ass shadow.
I love how Nic Cage played Big Daddy like Adam West. That was a master stoke. And the girl who played Hit Girl was amazing. I agree with Mathew Vaughn who said she is the Jodie Foster child of this generation. So thats my review thanks for listening and Ill be back next week with more reviews.
